Is e-biking cheating?
Some people seem to think that riding an e-bike is cheating, and that pedalling an e-bike requires no energy at all, that we simply turn the throttle and go. Firstly, no modern e-bikes have throttles, they were made illegal in January 2016, and secondly pedal assist bikes, are just that, assisting your pedalling. Anyone who has tackled long commutes or undulating singletrack in the woods knows how tough it can be! The beauty of electric bikes is that you can get as little or as much exercise as you like, depending on the distance and assistance mode you choose. You set the electric bike to suit your skill base, your fitness and your health...reducing the assistance as you get fitter and more confident.
Lets talk calories!
According to electricbikeblog.com, an e-biker burns, on average, 20% less calories than a traditional cyclist.
"Ron used electric assistance, he burned up 444 calories. When he did the bike ride without electric assistance, he burned up 552 calories. So riding with electrical assistance resulted in burning only 20% less calories. Burning 440 calories in an hour is a big deal – done regularly, this kind of calorie burn could result in significant weight loss." - electricbikeblog.com
